JVW ended Mamelodi Sundowns’ perfect start to the Hollywoodbets Super league (HSL) season as the top two teams going into week seven drew 2-2 at Tsakane Stadium on Saturday.
Sundowns had won all six of their previous HSL matches this season and, could have thought they were about to win their seventh match when they took an early lead on Saturday when Chuene Morifi gave them a lead inside the opening three minutes in Tsakane.
However, JVW captain Nompumelelo Nyandeni levelled matters for the host in the 29th minute to make it 1-1 going into the break.
Then, JVW took a 2-1 lead just two minutes after the break through Isabella Ludwig sending a strong message to the leaders.
It did not take long for Sundowns to respond as Lelona Daweti made it 2-2 just five minutes later to preserve Sundowns’ unbeaten league run dating back to the first season of HSL, then known as SAFA National Women league.
This result left Sundowns still on top with 19 points, with JVW remaining second with 16 points.
UWC beat UJ to maintain perfect home record.
A solitary goal courtesy of Sibulele Holweni’s penalty in the 62nd minute was enough to ensure UWC maintain home winning form as the beat UJ 1-0 to make it a perfect four victories at UWC sports ground.
