Zizwe United retain top spot in the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League after playing to a 1-all draw with second place Steenberg United at Nyanga stadium on Friday night.

Log leaders Zizwe came into the game at the back of a 1-0 loss at the hands of Magic FC in the round of 18, which had cut their lead at the top to just three points. A win by second place Steenberg would have propelled them to the top of the league due to their superior goal difference.

The game started at a fiery pace as both teams look to take control of the game early but it was not to be as the game went into the halftime break goalless.

Steenberg started the second half on the front foot looking to take the lead but failed to breach Zizwe defence with goalkeeper Blessing Makhathini making couple of good saves.

But it was Zizwe that opened the scoring from the penalty in the 67th minute after Steenberg goalkeeper, Jaleen Johnson was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box. Johnson was shown a straight red card for his trouble.

Zizwe marksman, Mpho Erasmus converted the penalty past the replacement goalkeeper, Siphamandla Hleza to make it 1-0.

The goal seemed to have fired up the 10 men Steenberg as they launched attack after attack.

Steenberg were rewarded for their effort as substitute Shiraaj Davids levelled matters from a direct free-kick in the dying seconds of the match to earn his team a much needed point.

Zizwe coach Julius Dube was disappointed to concede the goal so late.

“We are disappointed but it is part of the game, it is lapse of concentration in the dying minutes of the game but I believe the boys fought.” Dube said

Steenberg coach Michael Lukhubeni was equally disappointed to only get 1 point, more so with the officials.

“I am not happy for a point, our game plan was to pick up 3 points.” Lukhubeni Said.

“If we get officials who are officiating like this, they are not promoting football. We came here to play football, not to be robbed the way we were robbed (referring to the penalty decision).”

“I don’t mind if they give the keeper a red card, but you can’t punish twice. If it is a penalty, then it must be a yellow card. That is what the rules say.”
