The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Irvin Khoza has announced a new competition, DStv Compact Cup to be played on 22 and 29 January 2022.
The new competition will be themed as “The Viewers’ Choice”, the DStv Compact Cup will bring viewers even closer to the game by making their voices heard and giving them a feel of the revered coaches seat.
The competition will take place over the last two weekends of January 2022, where viewers, coach and player collaboration will be paramount, as the PSL divides its 16 member clubs into four regions, comprising of two inland and two coastal regions, as follows:
- Coastal Group 1: AmaZulu; Golden Arrows; Maritzburg United; Royal AM
- Coastal Group 2: Cape Town City; Stellenbosch; Chippa United; Baroka (exception)
- Inland Group 1: SuperSport; Mamelodi Sundowns; Marumo Gallants; Sekhukhune
- Inland Group 2: Orlando Pirates; Kaizer Chiefs; Swallows; TS Galaxy
Fans will have an opportunity to suggest names of the four teams through the SuperSport TV social media pages (Facebook and Twitter) between the 13 – 19 December 2021.
Then, from 20 December 2021 to 3 January 2022, fans will choose their favourite players from these teams (except players that will be going to the AFCON in Camerron) using a safe and secure USSD code to form the regional DStv Compact Cup squad.
The final squad lists will be announced on 5 January 2022 with voting for the starting line-ups commencing thereafter and closing on 12 January 2022.
PSL Chairman of the PSL, Dr Irvin Khoza said this is yet another amazing PSL innovation.
“This is yet another amazing innovation. It will be refreshing that the responsibility of team selection, technical team and name choice will reside with the fans. The roles are now reversed, and we will come out better informed about the fans’ understanding of player chemistry through their team selections. “ Khoza said.
