A solitary goal by Lindokuhle Gladile was enough for The University of the Western Cape (UWC) to score a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Vasco da Gama in the Hollywoodbets Super League encounter on Wednesday afternoon at Parow Park.
Gladile scored the all important goal in the 36th minute to give UWC the much needed three points and the bragging rights against their neighbours. This was their seventh win on the trot.
UWC came into the Cape Derby game in 3rd place on the log but level on 59 points with second place and fellow University side, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and knew that the three points will give them advantage in the race for second place with only two games left.
UWC need four points from their remaining two games while TUT cannot afford to drop points if they want to have a chance to finish second. Forth placed JVW with 54 points are mathematically also still in the running for second place as they have a game in hand over UWC and TUT.
UWC will play relegated Golden Ladies before hosting Durban Ladies in the last game of the season. TUT will visit Ma-Indies before welcoming the already relegated Golden Ladies in Pretoria.
In another midweek game played on Thursday, 17 November 2022, Boitumelo Rabale scored a first half hattrick as champions Mamelodi Sundowns demolished Coal City Wizards 7-0 Puma Stadium in Witbank.
Miche Minnies, Hlogi Mashigo, Andisiwe Mgcoyi, and Melinda Kgadiete added four goals after the break.
