Banyana Banyana secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging Burkina Faso 1-0 in Casablanca, Morocco, on Tuesday evening.
The one time African champions booked a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash against tournament hosts Morocco after Thembi Kgatlana scored the decisive goal in the 21st minute. The result, coupled with Ivory Coast’s 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the other Group B fixture, ensured South Africa’s progression to the knockout stages.
Desiree Ellis’ side will now travel to Rabat, where they will face Morocco on Saturday for a place in the semifinals.
South African Football Association (SAFA) President Dr Danny Jordaan congratulated the team on reaching the last eight and urged them to continue their impressive campaign.
“Well done, Banyana Banyana. We are fully behind you and we are aware that one more victory will qualify us for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027,” said Jordaan.
The 2026 WAFCON also serves as the African qualification tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the four semifinalists earning automatic qualification to the global showpiece.
With a World Cup berth now just one victory away, Banyana will be determined to overcome the hosts and continue their quest for a second continental crown while securing a place on football’s biggest stage.
