Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi says years of leading teams at the highest level have taught him to embrace criticism, insisting he uses fair assessments to improve while refusing to be distracted by opinions he cannot control.
The 30-year-old, who captained Golden Arrows before making the move to Pirates in 2022, has become one of the Buccaneers’ most influential figures. Despite not always being a fan favourite, Sibisi has continued to establish himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s most consistent defenders.
His performances have backed that up. Sibisi was crowned the Betway Premiership Defender of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign and was nominated for the same accolade again in the 2025/26 season. His club form has also translated onto the international stage, earning him a regular place with Bafana Bafana, where he has featured at back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup.
Having experienced both praise and criticism throughout his career, Sibisi says he has learned to accept that scrutiny comes with wearing the armband at one of the country’s biggest clubs.
“I’ve grown used to taking the criticism,” Sibisi said.
“Sometimes the criticism is fair and, if it’s fair, I try to take it as best as possible and improve. But, as you’ve said, sometimes it’s not fair and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
Rather than allowing outside noise to affect him, the former Golden Arrows skipper says he remains focused on the work that has brought him success.
“For me, it’s just about trusting myself and continuing to do what I’ve been doing. I don’t think it’s by chance that I’m here. I’ve worked hard, I’ve won titles with the club and it’s been a great four years for me.”
As he enters another season leading the Buccaneers, Sibisi says developing resilience has been crucial, especially given the expectations that come with captaining Orlando Pirates.
“I’ve tried to grow a thick skin. As long as it doesn’t affect my family, I’ll deal with it as best as possible.”
While opinions about the Pirates captain continue to divide supporters, Sibisi’s résumé continues to grow. From leading Golden Arrows to captaining one of Africa’s biggest clubs, winning domestic silverware and establishing himself as one of South Africa’s leading centre-backs, the defender has repeatedly allowed his performances to answer his critics.
