Tashreeq Matthews says Mamelodi Sundowns must quickly turn their attention to the Carling Knockout Cup as they look to respond to their shock CAF Champions League elimination against Angola’s Wiliete SC.
The Sundowns attacker believes the Brazilians must put their disappointing CAF Champions League exit behind them and return to winning ways when they face Marumo Gallants in the Carling Knockout Cup on Tuesday.
Sundowns suffered a shock elimination from Africa’s premier club competition over the weekend, losing out to Angolan side Wiliete in the preliminary rounds. The result was a significant setback for the defending champions, who had ambitions of making another deep run in the continental competition.
However, Matthews insists that while the disappointment is difficult to overcome, the team must remain focused on the challenges that lie ahead.
“I think after the game we have to reflect, but it’s also important that you take the step forward and continue,” Matthews said.
“It’s difficult, very difficult to get over what happened, but at the end of the day, you have to take the step forward because you have to continue.”
With the Carling Knockout Cup now presenting an immediate opportunity to respond, Matthews believes Tuesday’s encounter against Marumo Gallants is an important fixture for the Tshwane giants.
The attacker highlighted the significance of the remaining silverware on offer, insisting that Sundowns still have plenty to play for this season.
“There are four things that need to be won. Yes, the Champions League is the biggest thing in Africa to win, but we still have a lot of trophies to look forward to and to win,” he added.
“The next one is the most important one that we have, and we have to overcome it, get back to winning ways and get over this feeling.”
Sundowns will also be wary of the threat posed by Gallants, having suffered elimination at the hands of the Limpopo-based outfit in the same competition last season.
Despite the previous disappointment, Matthews insists that revenge is not the motivation behind Tuesday’s encounter, with the team’s focus firmly on securing victory.
“I don’t think it’s revenge. We just have to go, whichever team we play against, we have to win. We play to win, and that is important,” Matthews explained.
“Fortunately, we’re getting Marumo Gallants again, and we want to win the game. That’s what we’re going there to do.”
For Sundowns, Tuesday’s fixture represents more than just progression in the Carling Knockout Cup. It offers an opportunity to restore confidence, regain momentum and provide a much-needed response following their disappointing continental campaign.
