The handover event was conducted as part of Nedbank’s #PlayYourPart campaign which awarded the 2020 Nedbank Cup winners Mamelodi Sundowns, with the opportunity to contribute to football development by choosing a school in their community where the sports court would be built.

At Nedbank, sport development is an important part of our sponsorship philosophy. Through our partnership with The Sports Trust, we aim to continue supporting young athletes, while also making a meaningful difference in communities. We are proud to hand over the multipurpose sport court to the Stanza Bopape Secondary School. As money experts who do good, we would like to thank the 2020 Nedbank Cup winners, Mamelodi Sundowns who heard our call and played their part for their community to obtain a tangible benefit from the success of the club in the competition. We also thank our partners, The Sports Trust for their hard work and support in erecting this worldclass facility, “said Khensani Nobanda, Group Executive, Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Nedbank.

The official handover was conducted by the Minister of Sport Art and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, with Nedbank, Premier Soccer League chairman Dr Irvin Khoza and Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopane Motsepe in attendance.

“In terms of our Department targets as set out in the National Development Plan 2030, one of our core objectives is to create an enabling environment by ensuring that all South Africans have access to sporting facilities. Since the ring-fencing of the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), there has been significant progress in the provision of sport and recreation facilities in our municipalities. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will continue supplying sporting facilities, including play parks for children and outdoor gyms in collaboration with municipalities, focusing primarily on those municipalities that have not benefitted from the Municipal Infrastructural Grant (MIG).

However, we appeal to the private sector to equally assist in bridging the gap of infrastructure development, working together with our municipalities. Our appreciation once more goes out to Nedbank for advancing our call by making resources available and assisting in rolling out facilities so that as Government we are able to meet our objective of creating an enabling environment for all South Africans” stated Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

Since 2012, Nedbank has implemented a total of seven (7) multipurpose sports courts, now eight (8), providing access and opportunity to learners, schools and communities to participate in sports through Nedbank sponsorship initiatives.

Thrilled to receive the multipurpose sports court, the Stanza Bopape Secondary School principal, Mr. Bethuel Malepe said, “We feel very blessed and extremely grateful to be entrusted with this multipurpose sports court. It will be of great benefit to both the school and the surrounding community.

Our learners will be able to enjoy different sporting codes on the court and we will encourage them to take good care of it so that it lasts for a long time. Sport teaches learners about proper values, keeps them safe from the streets and away from substance abuse.  We would therefore like to thank Nedbank, Mamelodi Sundowns and The Sports Trust for this wonderful gift.”
