Coach Hugo Broos’ team secured an impressive 2-1 victory over 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists, Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at FNB stadium on Saturday.
South Africa took an early lead in the fifth minute when the recently CAF championship league winner, Percy Tau’s free kick forced an own goal from the Moroccan side goalkeeper, Munir El Kajoui.
The game kept the fans on the edge of their seats as both teams continued to attack producing a total of 10 shots at goal. Bafana Bafana had the best opportunities to increase the lead but had to settle for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Bafana Bafana finally got their second goal when Zakhele Lepasa made in 2-0 just three minutes into the second half after capitalizing on a rebound from Mihlali Mayambela’s attempt.
Morocco fought back, and were rewarded with a goal on the hour mark when Hakim Ziyech’s shot at goal beat Ronwen Williams into the bottom corner of the net. This was Ziyech’s first goal since the FIFA World Cup group stages.
The visiting Africa’s highest-ranked team were the favorites coming into the game but Coach Broos’ team wanted it the most, and deservedly walked away with a 2-1 win over World Cup semi-finalists.
