Barker – Match Decided By Referees Once Again

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has expressed major disappointment with the officiating following their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal 3-1 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.

The controversial moment came in referee’s added time when Pule Mmodi scored to make it 2-1 but the linesman had his flag up for George Matlou’s fouls on goalkeeper Sage Stephens. However, referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa overruled the linesman and awarded the goal to Chiefs following a long discussion between the match officials.

Mfundo Vilakazi later scored a third goal deep in injury time to ensure Chiefs’ victory.

Talking to the media after the match, a visibly angry Barker said this was not the first time his team had lost through a decision by the match officials.

“I’m not gonna talk too much about the game It doesn’t help us sit again, try and explain,” Barker said

“You know, we could have done this or they have done that better or we done that better and ultimately the game decided once again on a refering decision.

“So, it’s just really disappointing. I really looked at it, fortunately, the linesman has given his flag up, what he’s seen as a foul on the keeper, which was blatantly was a foul. It really doesn’t help to sit here and talk about the match to be honest with you.”
