Kaizer Chiefs pay the price as they are found guilty of the pitch invasion and the delaying of the restarting of the match in their MTN8 quarterfinal encounter against Stellenbosch at the Danie Craven stadium in August 2022.
Premier Soccer League (PSL) prosecutor Zola Majavu have confirmed that Chiefs pleaded guilty and have been fined but PSL will cover the costs of the sitting for failing to provide adequate security.
“I can confirm that earlier this evening, Kaizer Chiefs Football Club appeared before the PSL DC to answer to two counts of pitch invasion by the spectators as well as one count of the delayed restarting of the match after the pitch invasion,” Majavu said.
“They pleaded guilty as charged and having listened to extensive submissions on behalf of both the prosecutor as well as their legal representative the PSL DC sanctioned Kaizer Chiefs as follows.
“A monitory fine of R200 000, of which half is suspended for a period of 24 months on condition that during the period of suspension, they are not found guilty of the same offence.
“The league was directed to carry the cost of the sitting as opposed to Kaizer Chiefs on the understanding that the league, as the event organiser, ought to have arranged security differently.
“Kaizer Chiefs was ordered to pay the cost, if any, of the inner parameter fence which was breached by its supporters.
“The league was also ordered to pay the cost of the outer fence, which was damaged as a result of the invasion and due to what the DC characterized as inaccurate security arrangements.”
“Both the league as well as Kaizer Chiefs senior officials are directed by the DC to address a joint press conference at which they would be expected to convey a message to the masses out there regarding this type of ill behaviour. It was recognized that punishing the clubs alone in this circumstances is not enough. Hence the directive for the league also to shoulder some responsibility in assisting Kaizer Chiefs to address the masses out there, mindful of the fact that we have all emerged from Covid regulations and maybe people have forgotten how to behave in the stadium.”
