Coach Funani – Bucks Deserve To Play Professional Football

Bush Bucks coach Mondli Funani says Bucks are a big club that does not belong in the amateur level and deserves to be playing in a professional league.

Imbabala are currently competing in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League stream A following their relegation from professional football in 2020.

Coach Funani exclusively told Diski Voice that he has been mandated to take the team back to the Motsepe Foundation championship.

“The mandate is promotion because Bush Bucks is a big club that deserves to be playing in professional leagues,” Funani said.

Imbabala currently occupy 4th position after six games, with eight points, four points behind log leaders FC Ravens.

“I am not satisfied with where the team is because I feel we deserve better. The games we lost are not even games that we should have lost.

“But, at the same time we have to give credit to the boys, they have been brilliant.

“We are playing with young boys who new to the league, playing against teams with seasoned campaigners and we closed the year on a good note.”

Coach Funani believes the lesson learned by the team in the opening six games of the season will serve them well going into the second half of the season.

“We have learned a lot from these games,” Funani added.

“The main lesson would be we don’t need to play a good brand of football all the time.

“Sometimes we must be content with playing ugly and taking the points, because this is a promotional league and points must be prioritized at all times.

“We will definitely be focusing more on our defensive side because we have conceded way too many goals for my liking.”

Bush Bucks are back using their ancestral home Mthatha Stadium, and coach Funani has urged the fans to continue rallying behind the team stating that the team truly appreciate the support from the fans. He promises them that the team will fight for every point till the bitter end.

Bucks resumed training today, 8 January 2024 following a short Christmas break. They will restart their season on 20 January away to Hanley FC.
