Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says lack of budget prevented Bafana from camping closer to the host nation, Ivory Coast which would have provided his side with more options of teams to play warm-up matches.
Bafana were left with not much options after setting up camp in Stellenbosch, Western Cape and had to settle for a warm-up match against neighbouring country Lesotho.
The team will travel back to Gauteng today, 09 January 2024, before playing a behind closed doors warm-up match against Lesotho at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday. The team fly out to Ivory Coast on Thursday, 11 January for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“It was not easy to find opponents to come to South Africa to play,” Broos said at the open media day in Stellenbosch on Monday.
“When you go more north, you are more closer to Ivory Coast, then it is more easier to find teams. We thought about it [Camping up north], but okay, it was a matter of budget.
“We thought of going to Cameroon for the camp, but first of all, you have to get flights to get there, find accommodation, so it was a matter of budget.
“We had to look for teams who wanted to play against us. Lesotho came, I think they are not a bad opponent , certainly not! So okay, I am happy with it.
“We will try to play a good game on Wednesday.
“Honestly, for me the results are not important because we know what we are doing the last few days. The most important thing is that we have that game, and we will try to win, that is for sure.”
