Cape Town City denied Mamelodi Sundowns an “invincible” season following the Citizens’ 1-0 victory over the already confirmed Champions of the 2023/2024 DStv premiership at Loftus Versfeld stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sundowns had many opportunities to take the lead but were made to rue the many missed chances as Jaedin Rhodes capitalised on last man Mothobi Mvala’s mistake before slotting past Williams to hand City the opener in the 61st minute.
Sundowns continued to create chances, but in the end, City held on to hand the champions their first defeat of the season.
Kaizer Chiefs will miss the season opening MTN 8 following a 2-0 defeat to relegated Cape Town Spurs at the DHL Stadium.
Chiefs started the day in eighth, and need a win to finish the season in the top eight, and were expected to make an easy work of the already relegated Spurs.
However, it was Spurs who took the lead in the 37th minute through Ashley Cupido who beat Bruce Bvuma with a low shot from just outside the box.
Michael Morton increased Spurs’ lead in the 74th minute with a tap in from close range after Bvuma had saved Therlo Moosa’s effort. The final score was a comfortable 2-0 victory for the Urban Warriors.
The result , combined with victories for both Polokwane City and Lamontville Golden Arrows, meant Chiefs finished in tenth with Polokwane City taking the last spot in the top eight.
A solitary goal from Oswin Appollis was enough to hand Polokwane City a crucial 1-0 victory over TS Galaxy at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.
Arrows scored three goals through, Ryan Moon, Siyanda Mthanti, Olwethu Ncube to beat AmaZulu 3-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
AmaZulu’s consolation goal was a penalty converted by Augustine Kwem.
Richards Bay will contest the Promotion/relegation playoffs despite a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch at the King Zwelithini stadium as the nearest rival, Royal AM scored an important 2-1 victory over Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville stadium to ensure they remain in the DStv Premiership next season.
Orlando Pirates will compete in the CAF Champions League despite playing to a 1-1 all draw with SuperSport United at Orlando stadium as Stellies fell to Richards Bay.
The rest of the last day results:
Chippa United 0 – 1 Sekhukhune United
