Several in-form South African stars were left out of Hugo Broos’ preliminary Bafana Bafana squad, with some omissions already sparking major debate among supporters and football analysts alike.
1. Thembinkosi Lorch
One omission that continues to divide opinion is Lorch. If Hugo Broos was willing to reopen the reconciliation door for players like Sipho Mbule, many will question why Lorch was overlooked. The winger is arguably playing some of his best football at the moment and has shown flashes of the quality and experience that could benefit Bafana Bafana in crucial fixtures.
2. Lebone Seema
If discussions around the PSL Defender of the Season candidates are to be taken seriously, then Seema deserves to be in that conversation. Winning a domestic double and potentially securing a treble in his first season with Orlando Pirates is a remarkable achievement. His consistency and defensive maturity made him a strong candidate for a national team call-up.
3. Gift Links
Links has just enjoyed a breakout season in Denmark, where he was even shortlisted for Player of the Season. On current form, he deserved at least a closer look from the national selectors, especially considering that Samukelo Kabini — who plays in the same league and occasionally in a similar position — earned a place in the preliminary squad.
4. Renaldo Leaner
His performance against Stellenbosch FC may have ultimately counted against him, but Leaner had built an impressive reputation throughout the season. As one of the younger goalkeepers pushing for a national team breakthrough, he arguably deserved consideration. That said, the goalkeepers currently shortlisted have also risen to the occasion and justified their selections.
5. Grant Kekana
Kekana’s omission came as a major surprise given his experience and leadership qualities. A regular figure in the Mamelodi Sundowns setup, Kekana offers stability, composure, and valuable experience at the back. His presence could have added another layer of assurance to the current Bafana Bafana defensive line.
