Mamelodi Sundowns veteran midfielder Themba Zwane has called on his teammates to embrace the moment and make history for the club and the country ahead of this Sunday’s CAF Champions League final return leg against AS FAR Rabat in Morocco.
The Brazilians will take a 1-0 lead from Pretoria last weekend to Rabat as they look to clinch their second continental crown, 10 years after their first triumph in 2016.
Speaking after the team’s first training session ahead of the highly anticipated clash, Zwane reflected on the demanding journey to Morocco but insisted the squad remains focused and motivated.
“The session was good,” Zwane said. “We had time to rest and prepare properly. Before the session, we analysed the opponent and understood what to expect from them. Today was mainly about tactics and how we are going to approach the game, while also starting slowly after the long travel.”
Despite the fatigue from the trip, the Sundowns captain highlighted the strong spirit within the camp, emphasizing the unity and excitement among the players ahead of one of the biggest matches of the season.
“The travel was long, but the mood is super okay,” he explained. “Everyone is excited. You can see the brotherhood in the team. We push one another, we had fun on the flight, and we are trying to keep the mood positive as much as possible.”
For Zwane, the occasion also brings back memories of previous continental success. Having experienced CAF Champions League glory before, the experienced playmaker believes the current group has an opportunity to cement its legacy in African football.
“I always remind the younger players about where we started and the excitement that winning brings to the country,” he said. “We have to push ourselves and try to make history. I think this group will be remembered even after 10 years. I always remind them how important this game is and that we must show ourselves on this stage.”
The return leg in Morocco is expected to be a fierce battle, with AS FAR Rabat looking to use home advantage and passionate local support to overturn Sundowns’ advantage. However, Zwane believes the backing from supporters both at home and travelling to Morocco could provide an extra edge for the South African champions.
“To the supporters at home, keep supporting us,” Zwane said. “We appreciate all your messages on social media and everywhere else. We will do our best to win the game, win the trophy, and make you happy.”
“And to the fans travelling to Morocco, we really appreciate your effort to come this side. Hopefully we will see you at the stadium singing and pushing us like always. We look forward to seeing them in the stands.”
With pressure mounting and continental glory within reach, all eyes will once again be on Zwane — the calm, experienced leader expected to inspire the record South African champions on one of African football’s grandest stages.
A victory for Mamelodi Sundowns would also secure qualification for the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, adding even greater significance to Sunday’s final in Morocco.
