Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp and Supersport United striker Bradley Grobler have been named Absa Premiership Coach and Player of the Month for August 2019.
Middendorp’s Chiefs went undefeated in the Absa Premiership in August, impressively registering three wins from four games collecting 10 points from a possible 12. Amakhosi, who are on top of the league, started the season with an entertaining 3-2 victory at Highlands Park. They went on to beat Black Leopards 1-0 and Cape Town City 2-1 away from home. The draw came at home when they played to a 1-1 draw with Gauteng rivals SuperSport United.
Middendorp impressed the judging panel, made up of coaches, analysts and commentators, in the manner he has managed to revitalize Kaizer Chiefs in the new season as well as getting the new players to gel in a team that struggled for form last season.
Meanwhile, Grobler’s free–scoring start to the new season has earned him the monthly individual player award. The Matsantsanta forward scored four goals in four outings last month. He found the back of the net twice against Orlando Pirates, then scored a goal each against Kaizer Chiefs and Baroka FC. He also provided an assist in the game against Orlando Pirates. His goals saw his side secure seven points in August, helping Kaitano Tembo’s side to fourth in the Absa Premiership table, going into the international break.
The panel of judges singled him out as the most noticeable and best performing player owing to his contribution in front of goals, good protection of the ball when in possession and how he greatly positions himself in the opponent’s box.
The 31-year old Grobler was chosen ahead of other impressive players such as Highlands Park’s Peter Shalulile, Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompo Kekana and Kaizer Chiefs teammate’s Lebogang Manyama and Eric Mathoho.
For winning the monthly awards, Middendorp and Grobler will each receive R5 000 from Absa, proud sponsors of the Absa Premiership.
