Taariq Fielies gives Cape Town City advantage against Mamelodi Sundowns while Kaizer Chiefs will head into their second-leg of MTN8 semi-final against SuperSport United with an advantage after scoring two away goals in the first-leg.
Last year’s finalists, attempting to reach the final for the 2nd successive year, started the game slow and were luck not to be punished after centre-back Kouassi Kouadja was caught napping in the opening minutes.
City had the first real chance of the match just two minutes after the break but Craig Martin’s back-heel attempt went narrowly wide.
Fielies scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as City beat a Sundowns side that had made as much as nine changes from the team that played Highlands Park midweek.
Sundowns were unlucky to go back to Pretoria without at least a draw as they were twice denied by the crossbar. First, Siphelele Mkhulise’s strike from the edge of the box came off the crossbar in the 57th minute before Anele Ngcongca’s header also came off the crossbar in the 90th minute.
Sundowns must now score at least twice in the second leg on Sunday to prevent City reaching a second successive final.
On Sunday, Supersport United and Kaizer Chiefs played to an entertaining 2-2 draw at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Khama Billiat scored the opening goal with a tap-in from a Dumisani Zuma’s cross in the 19th minute before Bradley Grobler’s brace gave United a 2-1 lead in the first half. Grobler scored in the 24th and 38th minute.
Leonard Castro levelled matters with a deft chip over Ronwen Williams just a minute into the second half after being put through by Billiat.
In the end, 2-2 was how the score remained as Amakhosi will head to the FNB stadium on Saturday with two away goals.
