Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Derrick Spencer believes Chiefs need to beat Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-finals 1st leg encounter on Saturday if they want to have a chance to advance to the final.

The two teams will be facing each other for the second time this season after Sundowns scored a 2-1 victory over Amakhosi in the DStv premiership encounter at the beginning of August 2023.

Spencer says a win for chiefs might also give them the motivation and courage to carry them throughout the season.

“MTN8 is always a good competition to gauge the team in terms of preparation for the rest of the season, to know where you stand, and to try new players,’ Spencer said.

“The price money is always good, and it is good to start a season by winning a trophy. It gives you motivation and courage to carry you throughout the season.

“I think for Chiefs, they did not have a good start but, they are some positive signs that the team is playing well. They have signed some good players that we have now seen in the last four games, hopefully they will do well.

“It is going to be difficult. Sundowns obviously have been playing well for the past three, four seasons, and they are way ahead of everyone. But on the day, it is football. Chiefs have been playing well, even in the last game that they played Sundowns, they were just unlucky. If chiefs want to win this one, they will need to dig deep because Sundowns have some special quality players.

“It is not going to be easy for Sundowns as well. Sundowns is playing away, so for Chiefs, they need to get a win this weekend as they are playing at home and try to manage the game away in Pretoria.”

Kaizer Chiefs will host Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of their clash on Saturday, 02 September 2023 at FNB Stadium. The return leg fixture will take place at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, 23 September 2023.
