Pirates Beat Stellies To Win Third Successive MTN8 Cup

Orlando Pirates have been crowned the champions of the MTN8 for the third successive year following a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 final played at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Buccaneers scored two goals through second half substitutes Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng in injury time to successfully defend the MTN8 Cup crown. Puleng Saleng scored Pirates’ first goal which was an equaliser after Stellies’ early lead through Lehlohonolo Mojela

Pirates came into the game at the back of four successive cup final victories under coach Jose Riveiro, and have certainly confirm themselves as the a cup specialist.

Stellies started on the front foot, and it was not a surprise when they created the first opportunity to score in the 6th minute. Jayden Adams found Devin Titus with a through ball but he went down looking for a penalty after a touch from Pirates defender but referee Abongile Tom waived play on.

Four minutes later, stellies won two back to back corners but failed to convert any. 

Then, it was no surprise when Mojela scored the opening goal in the 12th minute with an acrobatic strike to make it 1-0. Saleng levelled matters in the 44th minute with a tap in after Sage Stephens had saved Deon Hotto’s attempt from a free-kick.

The entertaining first half came to an end with the score level.

Just when both teams might have been preparing for extra-time, Pirates won a free-kick which was taken quickly resulting in Mabasa making it 2-1 in the 1st minute of added time.

Mofokeng scored the 3rd goal in the dying seconds of the match to ensure the Buccaneers successfully defend their crown.
