Stellenbosch Football Club has announced the purchase of the SASOL Women’s League franchise from Stellenbosch University.
In a move that seems like the club is already planning for CAF Club competitions, the newly aquared club will compete in the 2024 SASOL Women’s League. Stellies currently occupy position two in the DStv premiership League which would qualify them for CAF Champions League.
As part of the agreement, the two entities have formed a unique collaboration aimed at advancing the development of women’s football in Stellenbosch and the wider Cape Winelands community.
Stellenbosch CEO, Rob Benadie said the purchase is in line with the club’s vision.
“Core to our Club’s vision is to build a sustainable football pathway for the region and to be a catalyst for social upliftment,” Benadie said in an official statement from the club.
“We want to see the females in our catchment area provided the same opportunities as the
males to play and compete at the highest levels of football in South Africa. The decision to establish a Women’s team alongside Stellenbosch University is the latest step towards accomplishing that vision and is one that we are excited to see come to fruition.”
The Club extended its gratitude to Stellenbosch University for their invaluable role in this partnership and for their shared belief in the transformative power of sport and in the pursuit of sporting excellence.
