Stellenbosch FC secured a top 8 finish following their 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy in the final round of the DSTV premiership at the Danie Craven stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams came into the game well aware that only a victory will give them an opportunity of a top 8 finish and a chance to fight for MTN8 trophy next season. Stellies’ confidence would have been sky high following their convincing 6-3 away win over Galaxy in the Nedbank Cup back in March.

Devin Titus opened the scoring for Stellies in the 16th minute bundling in a rebound after Fawaaz Basadien’s free-kick was saved by the keeper.

Stellies led 1-0 at the break.

Coach Sead Romavic’s team came back from the break fired up, and it was no surprise when they leveled matters three minutes into the second half through Lindokuhle Mbatha, who was assisted by Orebotse Mongae.

However , Stellenbosch responded swiftly as their maestro Junior Mendieta restored their lead with a beautiful header from Basadien’s cross, just two minutes after conceding.

Galaxy tried everything to come back into the game but Stellies defense stood firm to ensure Stellies walk away with all three important points that ensured they finish sixth on the DStv premiership standings.

Galaxy coach Ramovic was disappointed to finish the season outside of the top 8.

“We wanted to end in the top 8 but it has been an interesting season,” Ramovic said.

“it’s not easy to play against all the top clubs with the resources and well trained coaches but we had to fight.”

On the other hand, Stellies coach Steve Barker was overall satisfied with finishing well inside top 8.
