Mamelodi Sundowns started their DStv Premiership title defence mission with a 2-1 victory over Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Friday night.
Masandawana’s goals were scored by their marksman Peter Shalulile and debutant Lucas Ribeiro.
Shalulile opened the scoring in the 12th minute after converting a Penalty that was awarded following a handball by defender Edwin Gyimah.
Within minutes of conceding, things got worse for Sekhukhune after Vuyisile Mncube was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Teboho Mokoena. They were luck to go into the break trailing by only 1-0.
Then, another debutant, Thapelo Maseko, who come on for Aubrey Modiba at halftime, set up fellow debutant Riberio to make it 2-0 with 58 minutes gone.
Babina Noko pulled a goal back with 30 minutes to go through another debutant on the day, Jamie Webber to make it a nervy finish but Masandawana held on to claim all three points.
Both sides finished the game with 10 men after Sundowns’ Rivaldo Coetzee was sent off with eight minutes left.
