Moroka Swallows secured a 2-0 win over Stellenbosch in a DStv Premiership match played at the wet and windy Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday night.
The visiting team started with quiet an experienced side compared to the youthful home side with even their star man Sibongiseni “Ox” Mthethwa on the bench.
The Dube birds acclimatised quickly to the inclement playing conditions, and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring just two minutes into the game through Ntsako Makhubela to hand Swallows a 1-0 lead.
Stellies went looking for a quick reply but it was not to be as Swallows led 1-0 at halftime.
Things got worse for Stellies as they were reduced to 10 men after defender Olivier Toure was sent off in the 57th minute.
Tshegofatso Mabasa increased Swallows’ advantage in the 73rd minute when he made it 2-0 with man of the match Kwanda Mngonyama providing the assist.
Coach Steve Khomphela expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, especially with the clean sheet.
“Nice match, but for me the highlight was keeping a clean sheet,” Komphela told Diski Voice after the match.
“The goalkeepers, goalkeeper coach Thela Ngobeni [Thela], Musa Nyatama, Ditheko Mototo as well, they have been fighting very hard to keep a clean sheet. If you do not concede, you cannot lose a match.
“Above that, scoring two goals! The weather was quite bad. We learn as well that if my players had brought the right type of equipments, we could have scored more goals. But, we are delighted with the victory.”
