Cape Town Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett welcomes the two weeks FIFA international enforced break after their 2-1 shock defeat to Pretoria Callies in a Motsepe Foundation Championship league game on Sunday afternoon.

Before the defeat to Callies, Spurs was on an impressive run of 10 straight league wins a t Athlone Stadium.

Spurs remain at the top of the log despite the defeat but coach Bartlett sees it as a missed opportunity to open a gap at the top.

When asked by Diski Voice if the break has come at the right time or if he would have preferred to play another game straight away, coach Bartlett said the break probable came at the right time.

“it is probable at the right time after the loss,” Bartlett said after the game.

“The only concern for me, and the club, we have four players going away on international duty with the under-23. Now, we gonna wait until they come back, and hopefully they come back injury free because it is four players that are in our starting eleven.

“They come back three days before our next game, and that also got an impact, so we got to assess when they come back into camp.

“But, the next two weeks, we got to utilize now to the best of our ability. We have couple of friendlies set up against the PSL clubs, because we got to keep these players ticking over, we can’t let them relax at any moment. We have seen what that can do, so we got to make sure, like I said, that we bounce back in the next game.

“That is the quickest way to forget about this loss today.”

Spurs’ next game after the FIFA break is away to JDR at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve on Saturday, 1 April 2023.
