Kaizer Chiefs collected the first three points of the season after beating the newly promoted Highlands Park 1-0 away at Makhulong Stadium on Wednesday night.

After opening their 2016/2017 Absa Premiership campaign with a loss and a draw against Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars respectively, Chiefs finally collected all three points.

Chiefs were awarded a penalty after Augustine Leonard fouled William Thwala as he was chasing a through ball that would have left him with only Tapuwa Kapini to beat. Although the foul seemed to have happened outside the penalty box, the only person who mattered at that point, referee Lwandile Mfiki was convinced that it was inside.

George Lebese stepped up and coolly converted the penalty past Kapini in the 65th minute.

Highlands Park almost denied Chiefs all three points in the dying second of the match. Highlands were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Box after Itumeleng Khune was adjusted to have handled the ball outside the box but Khune produced a great save to tip Chalton Mashumba’s stinging shot over the bar.

In other games on Wednesday, Thuso Phala scored the only goal on the stroke of half time as SuperSport United defeated Maritzburg United 1-0 away at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Golden Arrows scored in the referee’s optional time through Lehlohonolo Nonyane to collect all three points away at Goble Park Stadium against Free State Stars.

Tuesday Results:

Orlando Pirates 0 – 0 Cape Town City FC

Baroka FC 0 – 2 Bidvest Wits (Thabang Monare, Cuthbert Malajila)

Ajax Cape Town (Nathan Paulse) 1 – 1 Polokwane City (Thobani Mncwango pen).
