There were victories for the NFD’s top three sides – Baroka FC, Witbank Spurs and Cape Town All Stars in Saturday’s National First Division action.
Baroka kept up their outstanding early season form and cemented their place at the top of the standings with a 3-0 win over Moroka Swallows at the Dobsonville Stadium.
Getting the goals for the team from the Limpopo were Dineo Shaku, Nkosinathi Ndlovu and Loyiso Simandla, Baroka now having scored 14 goals this season to lead Witbank Spurs on goal difference.
Spurs were 2-1 winners over Mthatha Bucks at the Mthatha Stadium, the Mpumalanga side netting a late winner through Cleopas Dube. The visitors had gone ahead through a Joshua Sauls penalty in the 52nd minute. Moses Spandeel had made it 1-1 with an 80th minute header before Dube netted the winner at the death.
Cape Town All Stars meanwhile returned to winning ways for the first time in three games with a 1-0 victory over Highlands Park at Athlone. The only goal of a match without too many chances was scored by Stars striker Thapelo Mathibe, who volleyed home Phetso Maphanga’s 64th minute cross.
Mbombela United continued their excellent form of late when they beat Black Leopards 3-2, away at the Thohoyandou Stadium.
Sicelo Gumede, Inky Masuku and Phetolo Sekome found the back of the net for the visiting side, while Bongani Manana and Jabulani Ndebele replied for Lidoda Duvha, who are in fifth spot, whole Mbombela climbed to fourth.
FC Cape Town moved to ninth position after recording a second win of the season, a 2-1 victory over AmaZulu at the NNK Rugby Stadium.
Maboke Matlakala chipped in with a brace for the African Beasts, with Bornwell Mwape scoring for Usuthu.
In a KZN derby at the King Zwelithini Stadium, the match between Royal Eagles and Thanda Royal Zulu ended in a 1-1 stale-mate. Katlego Mphela scored for Eagles, with Michael Gumede netting for Thanda.
On Sunday, a full blooded Cape NFD derby between Milano United and Santos at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday ended in a 1-1 draw, while Vasco da Gama, who beat African Warriors 2-0 up at the Charles Mopeli Stadium.
