As Bafana Bafana prepare for their highly anticipated World Cup qualifier against Nigeria in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, captain Ronwen Williams has spoken glowingly about South Africa’s emerging generation of footballing talent.
Under coach Hugo Broos, Bafana have developed a reputation as a team unafraid to upset the odds. Central to this has been Broos’ bold decision to form the nucleus of his first squad around players who represented South Africa at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Since then, he has continued to integrate a talented crop of youngsters, many of whom are confidently breaking onto the senior international stage.
At just 22 years old, Oswin Appollis and Jayden Adams were part of Bafana’s squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside 20-year-old Thapelo Maseko, gaining invaluable experience on the continental stage. Soon after, teenage prodigy Relebohile Mofokeng announced himself on the international scene, further underlining the depth of youthful talent available to Broos.
Most recently, Khulumani Ndamane (21), Samkelo Kabini (21), Mbekezeli Mbokazi (19), and Mohau Nkota (20) have joined the fold, quickly earning praise for their energy and fearless displays. Mduduzi Shabalala (21) is also awaiting his chance on the sidelines, while Ime Okon (21) missed out due to injury. Their rise has not gone unnoticed by Williams, who used the pre-match press conference in Bloemfontein to highlight just how impressed he has been.
“Over the past year, the amount of young talent coming through in the country has been remarkable,” Williams said.
“We haven’t seen this in a very long time, and they have all performed extremely well. Most of them are now getting their opportunity to represent the country, and as we saw in the last game, they delivered.
“Mbokazi was solid, Nkota scored a wonderful goal — it’s incredible to see the mentality they have at such a young age. Their focus, seriousness, and determination speak volumes about what they want to achieve as individuals,” Williams concluded.
With a growing blend of youthful exuberance and experienced leadership, Bafana are shaping into a formidable outfit. Against traditional rivals Nigeria, this youthful core could be key to pulling off another famous upset — a possibility Williams and his teammates are clearly relishing.
And with South Africa having qualified for both the U-20 and U-17 World Cups, Bafana are set to continue being spoiled for choice on the international stage.
