Banyana Bow Out Of FIFA World Cup

­Banyana Banyana bow out of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands in a Round of 16 match at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

Desiree Ellis’ girls got off to the worst start after Netherlands opened the scoring just 9 minutes into the game through Jill Roord. To compound matters, star forward Jermaine Seoposenwe was forced off with an injury in the 29th minute, and replaced by youngster Wendy Shongwe.

Then, ten minutes later, defender Bambanani Mbane was also stretchered off the pitch after suffering another injury, Tiisetso Makhubela replaced her.

Banyana had opportunities to find an equalizer before the break with a one-on-one chance falling to Thembi Kgatlana who was denied by the goalkeeper.

Netherlands increased their lead in the 68th minute when Lineth Beerensteyn’s tame shot somehow found a way past shocked Kaylin Swart.

Netherlands took total control of the game after scoring their second goal to claim a comfortable 2-0 victory to progress to the quarterfinals.
