Former u20 Women’s National Team captain and current Banyana Banyana midfielder Amogelang Motau is headed to the USA to join Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma.
Motau, who currently plays for University of Western Cape women’s team departs in August 2017. She will join the same university attended by midfieder Koketso Mamabolo and defenders Drishana Pillay and Charmelle Wiltshire.
Defenders Caryn van Ryneveld and Jamie Lee Witbooi, who have featured for the SAFA junior women’s national teams, will also be moving overseas, joining IBV in Iceland, bringing the number of South African women footballers plying their trade overseas to 17.
SAFA Assitant Technical Director, Fran Hilton-Smith said this bodes well for women’s football as the players will gain valuable international experience.
“With the u17 and u20 National teams becoming active soon, these players will gain valuable international experience to bring back to the teams which will help us qualify for more major tournaments.
“These ladies are paving the way for more interest in South African women players. Our players are competing on an equal footing and this raises the chances of more players being invited to play overseas.” said Hilton-Smith.
