Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has defended his tactical approach following South Africa’s FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico, insisting his side executed the game plan effectively and frustrated their opponents for large periods of the match.

Responding to questions about his strategy, Broos pointed to the balance his team established after surviving an intense opening spell from the Mexicans.

“I think when you watch the game, you will understand why I did that,” said Broos.

“Except for the first 15 minutes, when Mexico’s pressure was very high, there was a balance in the game after that.”

The Belgian tactician felt Bafana’s organisation and discipline disrupted Mexico’s rhythm, leaving them short of ideas in possession despite enjoying most of the ball.

“Again, Mexico became desperate. They didn’t know anymore what to do with the ball,” he explained.

“The two central defenders were just standing there with the ball at their feet because they couldn’t find a solution.”

Broos believes that period of control highlighted the effectiveness of his game plan, despite the disappointing result.

“I think that is the answer to your question about why I played like this today,” he concluded.

Although Bafana Bafana suffered defeat in their opening match, Broos remains encouraged by his side’s performance and believes there are positives to take into their remaining group-stage encounters.
