Ouaddou: Finer details will decide MTN8 final against Sundowns

As Orlando Pirates prepare for their MTN8 showdown against Mamelodi Sundowns, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes the finer details will ultimately determine who walks away with the trophy.

For Ouaddou, a cup final is not simply about talent or attacking quality. It is about how a team responds to pressure, manages key moments and remains disciplined and resilient when the stakes are at their highest.

The Buccaneers mentor has placed particular emphasis on the opening stages of the match, warning that the first 15 minutes could set the tone for what follows. With no room for error in a knockout final, Ouaddou says concentration will be critical, particularly when it comes to protecting the team from conceding.

“I always say that the first 15 minutes are very important in a game. You can see nearly what can happen after,” Ouaddou said.

“In a cup game you don’t have to concede, because it’s direct elimination. You have to be focused. The concentration, for me, is something very important.”

But while defensive organisation will be essential, Ouaddou knows finals can often be decided at the other end of the pitch. Chances are likely to be limited, making efficiency in front of goal just as important.

“In a final you don’t have such many chances, and you have to convert them,” he said.

Ouaddou refers to the penalty areas as the “two areas of truth” — the spaces where matches are ultimately won and lost.

“The two areas of the truth are the two boxes. How you will be efficient in those areas, and for a long time, not only for 20 minutes.”

For Pirates to overcome the Brazilians, Ouaddou believes they will need more than individual brilliance. Organisation, discipline and communication must underpin their performance, while experienced leaders will have a responsibility to guide a youthful squad through the pressure of a major final.

“You need organisation. You need discipline. You need a bit of communication,” he explained. “You need to have some leaders in every line.”

At the same time, the former Morocco international recognises that defensive solidity alone will not be enough. Creativity and freshness could provide the decisive difference in a contest where one moment of individual quality can change the game.

“You cannot only in a game defend. You need some creativity in this kind of final.”

Ouaddou points to Pirates’ recent cup-final experiences, where individual players have repeatedly produced moments of inspiration to turn matches in their team’s favour.

“If you see the last finals that Pirates played, you can definitely see that in every game you have one or two players that are able to bring you some creativity and to change the game.”

With Pirates boasting one of the youngest squads in the competition, Ouaddou accepts that youth brings both advantages and challenges. But rather than allowing the occasion to overwhelm his players, he wants them to embrace it.

“Most important, most important, to trust yourself, to keep believing in your capacity.”

That belief, according to Ouaddou, has been evident in the squad’s attitude and ambition throughout the campaign.

“I’m very confident with the team, with what they showed since the beginning, the ambitions that they showed. So I think we’re in a really good mood for our team.”

Against a Sundowns side that’s used to winning major trophies and operating under pressure, Pirates will need to execute the finer details Ouaddou has identified: a strong start, concentration, defensive resilience, clinical finishing, discipline, leadership and moments of creativity.

In a final where margins are often razor-thin, Ouaddou knows those details could be the difference between lifting the MTN8 trophy and walking away empty-handed.
