Stellenbosch Football Club have confirmed that their head coach Steve Barker has stepped down with immediate effect.
This follows an announcement yesterday by Tanzanian side , Simba SC that Barker is their new head coach.
Barker was appointed as Stellies head coach in July 2017 and spent eight years as Stellies coach. Barker helped Stellies gain promotion to the Premiership in 2018-19 and has since been their only coach in the premiership.
He was in charge of 309 matches across all competitions, including guiding the club to their first title in 2023 Carling Knockout Cup.
Barker describes leaving the club for Simba as a bittersweet moment.
“It is a bittersweet decision, but I feel the time is right for Stellenbosch to enter a new era with someone else at the helm, and I can only wish the Club continued success in the future,” Barker said.
“I believe that taking up a new and exciting challenge at one of the biggest clubs on the continent is something I need to pursue to further my own personal growth and ambitions as a coach, and I’m grateful that my time with Stellenbosch has helped open that door.
“I would like to thank each and every person at the Club for playing such an important and influential role in my time at Stellenbosch. I will forever cherish the memories we made together.”
