Melinda Kgadieta’s solitary goal was enough to earn Mamelodi Sundowns a hard-fought 1-0 victory over University of the Western Cape (UWC) at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The victory saw Sundowns maintain their perfect start to the season and keep pace with JVW Girls and First Touch Academy who have also won their opening three games. JVW are top of the log due to better goal difference with Sundowns in second followed by First Touch in third place.
Whatever plans UWC had coming into the game were destabilized inside the opening 18 minutes after Sduduzi Dlamini sustained a bad looking head injury after a collision with Sundowns’ Bambanani Mbane. Dlamini was stretched off the pitch and taken to hospital. She was replaced by Tiffany Kortjie who was making her SNWL debut.
The game’s only goal came in the 29th minutes, as Kgadieta produced a slick finish over the advancing keeper off a cross into the area from Marry Ntsweng.
UWC would be very disappointed to walk away empty handed after they had nine shots on goal (five on target) to the two of Sundowns.
