Following the conclusion of the sensational and action packed Carling League of Champions Regional play-offs which took place at Gugulethu Sports Grounds on Saturday 9 July; Carling Black Label on Sunday 10 July headed to the Fives Futbol Sports Complex in Century City Cape Town where they hosted their inaugural 5 aside tournament: Western Cape Tailoring.
The one-day football extravaganza was a gathering of 16 teams who fiercely contested against each other to be crowed the very first champions of the Western Cape Tailoring tournament and also stand a chance of winning R30 000 prize money. However, like any competition, there can only be one winner out of the 16 teams present. Green Point based team, Brexit maintained their momentum throughout the day and played with a good measure of defence and attack. Equally great, were the Steenbberg based Oragons who ultimately made it through to the finals to face Brixton. It was a tight, intense and fast-paced finale which saw Brexit triumphing with a 4-2 win against Oragons.
Present on the day was Western Cape Tailoring ambassador, Bafana Bafana legend, Shaun Bartlett who led and motivated the teams present. Reflecting on the proceedings of the day, Shaun Bartlett said being at the Tailoring Tournament was a great reminder of the rich and evolving football culture in South Africa.
“What I witnessed today was beautiful football and supportive communities coming together with the sole purpose of celebrating their football stars. I believe the event was a great success thanks to all the teams that participated, the Sponsorship of Carling Black Label and most importantly, the active support of all community members that came out in their numbers to support the teams partaking in tournament”, said Bartlett.
Carling black Label Marketing Manager, Sanele Gumede said he was proud that Carling Black Label was the first brand to own a 5 aside space, a tournament fast becoming a favourite way of enjoying football in South Africa. Big congratulations to Brexit who set the bar to what the Western Cape Tailoring is all about, we look forward to many more and in the process, adding value to football development as well as adding positive change in different communities in the Western Cape”, said Gumede.
