A solitary goal from Morne Nel was enough for ten-man Cape Town Spurs to secure an important 1-0 win over Casric Stars at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to take control of the PSL Promotion Playoffs.
Spurs came into the game well aware that a win will put them in the driving seat after winning their opening two matches. For Casric, this was a do or die encounter as only a win would have given them a remote chance of promotion.
Spurs would have feared the worst when they were reduced to 10-man after their marksman Ashley Cupido received a controversial straight red card in the 65th minute.
However, they opened the scoring in the 72nd minute when Morne Nel scored with a clinical finish from just outside the box.
Spurs only need one point from their last match against Maritzburg United to secure a return to the DStv Premiership. The match will take place at Harry Gwala stadium on 14 June.
Spurs could also be promoted on Saturday, 10 June but will need Casric to deny Maritzburg a win as Maritzburg need all three points to take the promotional race to the last day.
