Hildah Magaia scored a brace as Banyana Banyana were crowned the 2022 WAFCON champions after beating hosts Morocco 2-1 in the final at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat on Saturday night.
Banyana took the lead in the 62nd minute through Magaia who produced a clinical finish after being set up by Jermaine Seoposenwe’s pinpoint pass from the left.
Ten minutes later, Banyana doubled their lead when Karabo Dhlamini’s cross from the left found Magaia free in the box to calmly beat advancing goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi.
Morocco made it a tense last ten minutes for Banyana after pulling a goal back in the 80th minute through Rosella Ayane.
The home side throw the kitchen sink at Banyana looking for an equalizer but Banyana’s defence, led by the evergreen Noko Matlou, held on to win their first title.
Banyana Banyana were named the women’s National Team of the Year while Andile Dlamini was received Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the ceremony held on the pitch straight after the final whistle.
