Mamelodi Sundowns have wrapped up their seventh consecutive DStv Premiership championship with an easy 5-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Thursday evening.
Sundowns scored both five goals against 10-man Chiefs in the second half. Chiefs’ Given Msimango was given a straight red in the 18th minute following a foul on Lucas Ribeiro who was through on goal.
Chiefs managed to reorganise themselves and held Sundowns at bay to keep the scoreline goalless at the break.
However, Masandawana knew they could secure the league with a win, and came back from the break in a different mood.
Tashreeq Matthews broke Chiefs’ resistance with an opening goal after 52 minutes.
Four minutes later, Matias Esquivel’s shot deflected off Zitha Kwinika to extend the Masandawana’s lead before Matthews secured his brace in the 81st minute to make it 3-0.
Mduduzi Shabalala pulled a goal back with five minutes left after converting a penalty he had won after he was fouled in the penalty area.
Ribeiro and Thembinkosi Lorch scored two more goals in the 90th minute to hand Sundowns a 5-1 victory and confirm their seventh consecutive DStv Premiership title.
