Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has shed light on the surprise release of versatile player Thato Mokeke.
Mokeke spent five years at City after joining in January 2019 from Chippa United. The announcement to part ways by mutual agreement came as a surprise as his contract was set to expire in June 2024.
Coach Tinkler has now explained that Mokeke himself chose to leave now instead of at the end of the season.
“Thato was called in because we know his injury is a long term injury,” Tinkler told the media on Saturday.
“Looking forward to next season, Is Thato Mokeke in our plans, he wasn’t really gonna be in our plans.
“So, we gave him the option of staying until the end of the season or he could move now get fully paid, which is the chairman has paid him out in full of his contract and he can already start looking at other clubs.
“So, he chose that option. He wanted to stay with us until this period just to do a little bit of his rehab here, and then look to move on”
