Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane says the “arrogance” shown by debutant Samkelo Zwane when Amakhosi came from behind to defeat Stellenbosch 3-1 on Sunday afternoon is what they teach their development players.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who is the son of former Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos midfielder Eugene Zwane, made his debut for Amakhosi when he came on for Yusuf Maart with twelve minutes to play.
“We teach our development players the arrogance to demand the ball, to protect the ball. You must boss the midfield when you play,” Zwane said after the game at the DHL Stadium.
“He [Samkelo Zwane] is a midfielder, he can play as an eight, he can also play as a six. We had to give him an opportunity today, reason being, we wanted him to slow the game down. He has good technical ability, the vision, and he can easily switch the ball, and generate so much power.
“Like I said earlier on, it is good for us to give these youngsters opportunities, more especially if he is going to go in there and do well like he did. I still believe he could have done much better because we know his quality.”
Zwane hopes giving Samkelo a chance will encourage other youngsters within their development structures to work even harder.
“This will encourage other youngsters to work even harder because they stand a good chance with us. I know them very well as I spent time with them in the development. If we have to give a chance to a 15-year-old, we will do that!”
