University of the Western Cape (UWC) have qualified for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League following their 9-8 victory on penalties over Gaborone United in the COSAFA final at Mpira stadium, Malawi on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams could not be separated in 120 minutes as the score remained 1-1 when the referee blew the final whistle.
UWC forward, Noxolo Cesane’s scored the opening goal in the 71st minute with a tap in from Ntombifikile Ndlovu‘a cross.
UWC were in the lead for only nine minutes as Laone Moloi levelled matters with a header in the 80th minute.
UWC pushed for a winning goal in the last 10 minutes, but the United defence remained resolute.
UWC goalkeeper Siphesihle Dlamini proved the hero in the penalty shootout as she saved United’s 9th penalty, before Simnikiwe Mhlakaza converted her spot kick to send the Udubs to the CAFWCL.
COSAFA Zone will be represented by two teams in this year’s competition as UWC join Mamelodi Sundowns, the reigning CAF Champions League champions.
